Old growth jarrah trees felled for firewood

Conservation groups are appalled by the continued felling of old growth jarrah trees in State forest logging operations, and the waste and misuse of the resulting jarrah logs and timber.

Three photos on this page show huge jarrah logs from three recently felled jarrah old growth giants near Collie. The fate of these logs is uncertain - some may be sold to a sawmill, or they may be sold to SIMCOA for charcoal.

The final photo is of a huge pile of jarrah firewood logs, many of them old growth jarrah trees. These logs are in a firewood yard in Bibra Lake, Perth. Many of the logs appear solid and most of them could have been used to produce high quality jarrah sawntimber. Instead they will be burnt in suburban fireplaces and BBQ's. The consumers of this firewood will not even realise where the jarrah came from or how much wildlife habitat they have helped destroy.

It is because of scenes like these that a worldwide boycott of all jarrah products is called for.
