Alcoa Forest Destruction

Alcoa Forest Destruction

The last remnants of the jarrah forest, bulldozed into piles prior to burning. This area will then be drilled and blasted prior to mining.   Same as previous photo, except note the island of jarrah bottom right of photo. Small clumps of jarrah are sometimes left in the middle of mining areas as a "conservation" exercise. These areas are devoid of wildlife (remember, blasting and mining totally surround this island).

After mining, the little remaining topsoil is ripped into straight and curved lines using a bulldozer with tines attached. Alcoa then replants amongst these ridges. It is estimated that these ridges will last for generations.

In this photo it can be seen that much of the regeneration after mining has not taken, resulting in soil erosion. This area is close to the North Dandalup Dam - a major Perth water supply.
